The men could hear them even over the thunder and pounding waves. Hundreds of seagulls swarmed the sky just beyond the dock in a squawking, swirling mass. The saying goes that animals know when calamity will strike long before people do; none of the workers save a handful wanted to stick around and see what horror was headed for shore.
It must have been morbid curiosity that kept those last few men there. When Lioness and the giant arrived, they dared to peek out. She stood there, a towering sentinel, defiant in the face of so much nature as she waited for the inevitable confrontation.
